David Naito: Figurative in Nature: Glass Sculpture
January 2 - February 3, 2007
Boston, MA: Figurative in Nature, a group of new glass sculptures by David Naito, will open at The Boston Sculptors Gallery in the South End Gallery District on Tuesday, January 2, and continue through February 3, 2007. The artist’s reception is Friday, January 12 from 5 – 8 pm. The gallery is also open during SOWA First Fridays on January 5 and February 2 from 5 – 8 pm.
For 15 years Naito has made glass sculptures that draw a link to the body through absence and presence of the figure in his work. His new works include the use of blown, solid, and cast glass processes that are arrangements of figurative elements, soft forms, and natural formations, abstracted and simplified into intimate compositions. In one series, blown glass takes the form of a human head that has been silver leafed and rests on top of a another piece of blown glass that loosely resembles a stone.
Originally from Honolulu, HI, Naito moved to the Boston area after he received his MFA and taught sculpture at Alfred University/New York State College of Ceramics. This is Naito’s first exhibition with the Boston Sculptors Gallery. His work can also be seen through February 2007 at the Fitchburg Museum of Art. Naito’s glass sculpture will be showing concurrently with the sculpture of Joseph Wheelwright.
