Terrae Incognitae
Fueled by contemporary issues, new work by Charles Jones explores figures from the past through amended objects. Executed in a variety of materials including cast aluminum, cast glass, resin and bronze; these new works draw their energy from the elastic nature of history and the turmoil of the present.
The “Oars of Cortes” form the central theme of the show, unknown lands. Four 16 foot “vehicles of history” are suspended from the walls and ceiling, each with a metaphorical element replacing the traditional oar blade. Other works in bronze and cast glass address the conquistador, Pizarro and the great Mexican poet and Nobel laureate, Octavio Paz.
