Seeing Red, an installation by Laura Evans at The Boston Sculptors Gallery
October 11- November 11, 2006
Receptions: Friday October 13, 5-8pm and Friday, November 3, 5-8pm
Laura Evans’ exhibition, Seeing Red at the Boston Sculptors Gallery, October 11 – November 11, 2006 is full of visual surprises and tactile pleasures. The sculptures are a combination of common hardware: metal pipes, hinges, faucets, and soft fabric forms. The shapes alternately suggest internal organs, children’s toys and strange organisms emerging from lifeless household refuse.
Evans’ previous work includes quilt-like compositions with brown paper bags, tight minimalist sculptures cast from zip-lock baggies which resemble pillows and, most recently, installations using soft fabric forms which protrude from architectural hardware. Her work has always explored the physical properties of the chosen materials and it emphasizes process over product.
Evans received a B.A. from Hampshire College, and an M. F. A. from Boston University. She has exhibited widely in New England and most recently in New York City where her installation “Squeeze” was exhibited at the Brenda Taylor Gallery. Her work will be included in “ In Transit: From Object to Site”, an exhibition of installation art at the List Art Center at Brown University, Providence, RI, September 16- October 23, 2006. Evans is also represented in Boston by Barbara Krakow Gallery. This is her first exhibition with the Boston Sculptors Gallery.
