FITCHBURG ART MUSEUM PRESENTS
360° DEGREES IN FITCHBURG:
CONTEMPORARY SCULPTURE FROM
THE BOSTON SCULPTORS GALLERY
Opening reception October 1, noon to 4 p.m.
Exhibition on view through January 21, 2007
FITCHBURG – Fitchburg Art Museum presents a unique and dazzling display of sculpture this fall. "360° IN FITCHBURG: CONTEMPORARY SCULPTURE FROM THE BOSTON SCULPTORS GALLERY" features the work of more than two dozen area sculptors. A variety of workshops and classes focused on the current exhibition will be held this fall. The exhibition opens on Sunday, October 1, from noon to 4 p.m. in conjunction with another exhibition, "Inspiring
Minds Through Art: An Introduction to Object-Based Learning." There will be a gallery talk on "Object-based Learning" October 1 from 2 to 2:30 p.m. Both
exhibitions will be open through January 21, 2007.
" This exhibition was organized in response to requests from teachers who wanted to integrate sculpture into their lessons," explains Museum Curator Kristina Durocher. "Several of the artists use traditional methods, such as casting, but the sculptures they create are made from non-traditional materials, such as rubber, or glass, and depict everyday objects. These
pieces are especially playful and humorous. There are also abstract sculptures that might evoke recognizable shapes and forms but remain enigmatic.
"This exhibition offers the public and students who use the Museum an opportunity to see some of the most recent work from twenty-six of Boston's best known contemporary sculptors." One gallery space will be transformed into an interactive "studio." "Children of all ages will have an opportunity to try their hand at sculpture using a variety of materials," adds Durocher.
Artists on exhibition include: Laura Baring-Gould, Michael Beatty, Lorey Banonte, Murray Dewart, Laura Evans, Christopher Frost, Beth Galston, Peter DeCamp Haines, Charles Jones, Niho Kozuru, Peter Lipsitt, Michelle Lougee, David K. Naito, David Phillips, Robert Schelling, Nancy Selvage, Pat Shannon, Julia Shepley, Margaret Swan, Marilu Swett, Ann Torke, Bill Wainwright, Ellen Wetmore, Jow Wheelwright, Leslie Wilcox, Dan Wills.
The Boston Sculptors Gallery is a landmark cooperative and has served as an alternative venue for exciting, innovative solo sculpture exhibitions since 1992. The Gallery has also won numerous awards and features rotating exhibits by its 30 members.
